School Council

What is the School Council?

A school council provides a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions that impact upon them. Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) -Respect for views of the child.

At Burton Leonard Primary School, our school council is a group of children that represents the views of all our pupils. It gives our children the opportunity to have their voices heard and be part of the whole school community. They help to makes decisions about school life and organise projects that support learning and development, such as organising charity events, theme days or representing the school at outside events.

We value the opinions of our pupils and our school council gives pupils a forum to share these opinions with Mrs Wolfe and other members of staff.

Who are the School Council representatives?

A new school council is elected each year and is made up of a representative from each year group from Year 1 to Year 6. All school council representatives are elected by their peers at the beginning of each academic year. 

A representative from each  of our other pupil groups are also a part of the school council, so that all our groups can connect and work together to bring exciting ideas to the fore.

This year's school council will also include associate members from our other pupil groups. 

School council aims:

• To meet regularly to discuss their views and be heard.

• To organise whole school and class events

• To organise charity days

• To make sure our school is a happy and safe place for all of our children

• To make sure children have a place to voice their concerns, opinions, and thoughts

• To encourage all children in school to suggest ideas and improvements

• To ensure any suggestions or concerns are listened to and acted upon
• To make a difference in our school, local, national and global communities

What do we do?

To live out our vision, the School Council organises a termly 'Make a Difference Day'.  We aim to make a difference. 

Our Meetings:

26th September 2024

- Received our new badges 

- discussed our roles and responsibilities 

- talked about getting a school pet in the spring 

- talked about our strategic plan for the year 

- how we will communicate with our classes

- what roles we would all have 

- charity days and how we can raise money and help others in need 

- how pupils can raise money 

- how we will be supported

- discussed creating our new School Council Display Board linking our Make a Difference day to World Food Day 

- how we can include associate members form other pupil groups 

- linking our plans to the school ribbons 

- organising anti-bullying week 

 

10th October 2024

Feedback from classes 

- Eco-club to look at tackling mole hills 

- look at fundraising for activities that pupils have asked for (non-school uniform day in the spring; Skylar & Jack to write to FOBLS asking for help; target to raise £500 - council to take a vote on which physical activity)

- mud kitchen equipment (Maddie & Isla to create posters and reach out to families via Mrs Wolfe's Weekly Update)

- Den building equipment (tarps & wood) - Maddie, Isla & Rafferty to communicate to school community 

- Council to meet with Mrs Hanson (Chair of FOBLS) to discuss council running Bake Sales 

- School Council & Mrs Wolfe to help decorate the Pumpkin Party with FOBLS

- Isla shared a competition to have an author in school (Safiya Ahmed) - council to gather ideas from classes and then enter competition

- We discussed Make a Difference Day and came up with ideas for the day - Council to meet with class teachers 

- Discussed ideas for fundraising: special dress up days; Teddy Bear's Picnic 

 

23rd October 2024

- Met with Mati, who shared her ideas for a toy collection Toys4Life to raise money for charity/school council fund; Mrs Wolfe shared the link - council decided to do this next half term (Mati to create posters with Lyra 

- Re-visited last meeting's actions

- Decision made to donate £40 raised from bake Sale to Feeding Britain Charity 

- brought together pupil ideas to submit The Week Junior author competition - Skylar & Jack typed up, Mrs Wolfe to submit

- Council worked on posters for various campaigns 

- discussed new notice board
