Love our neighbour,
enabling everyone to shine
and make a difference
in the world

Burton Leonard Church of England (VC) Primary School

At Burton Leonard C of E (VC) Primary School, our vision is "to love our neighbour, enabling everyone to shine and make a difference in the world."

The inspiration for our vision comes from the Parable of the Good Samaritan; "love your neighbour as yourself." Luke 10:27.

Every person matters at our school and everyone is nurtured as individuals to shine and make a difference in the world. We are part of a vibrant, village community. We love and care for each others and all are welcome.

The Good Samaritan shares our school values of courage, love and service. The Good Samaritan demonstrated courage by being the person that made a difference. He demonstrated love in his ability to support and care for the injured man. We encourage all to take inspiration from the Good Samaritan, loving our neighbours as he did and providing service to others. We ask ourselves, Who is our neighbour? and How can we shine together?

Our school is a special, warm and inspiring place of learning. We pride ourselves on the close relationships we have with our families, the Church and local community. We are proud to be a part of the community and the people we serve. Come and visit to see how brightly all at Burton Leonard shine!

We hope that you find everything you are looking for on our website. Please feel free to contact Mrs Drake, our School Business Manager, if you have any questions or queries.  We are always happy to help.

We look forward to welcoming you and would encourage all to come and visit us to find out more about what makes Burton Leonard the unique place that it is.

    Mathematics

    Mathematics

We appreciate the beauty and power of mathematics and it is our intention that all children will achieve and master mathematics, seeing themselves as mathematicians and succeeding individually. Children will demonstrate deep understanding by applying a variety of strategies that develop children’s conceptual understanding and procedural fluency side by side. Learning is broken down into small steps that enable children to develop conceptual knowledge. We have adopted a research-based Teaching for Mastery approach that enables all children to become fluent mathematicians.  Pupils will be able to reason mathematically and use their learning to solve a range of problems.

    Reading

    Reading

Reading is at the heart of all we do here at Burton Leonard Primary School. The importance of reading is recognised and celebrated and, as the key to unlocking the rest of the academic curriculum, underpins much of what we do in school. Developing a culture where reading is at the forefront of our day-to-day teaching is established in Reception and consistently developed through to year 6 with opportunities for children to ‘read for pleasure’, both individually and with others, provided regularly. As reading engagement is strongly correlated with reading performance in an academic sense, we strive to make reading as enjoyable and purposeful as possible to ensure no child is left ‘disengaged’ with reading; our children’s passion for reading is evident in school and is something we intend to build upon. Verbal discussions based around a text are recognised as key to unlocking understanding and engagement and this is a key factor in our approach to teaching comprehension skills. By the end of year 6, we intend for our children to be fluent and passionate readers, whilst also being equipped with the skills to apply this passion to enhance their understanding across the curriculum.

    Design & Technology

Design and Technology is a hands on, inspiring, practical subject. At Burton Leonard, we intend to build a curriculum which is inspiring, rigorous and practical. We encourage children to take risks and learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. Children are given opportunities to acquire appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum. We want Design and Technology to prepare our children, to give them opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences they need to be successful in later life. This involves the children learning about the world we live in and developing a wide range of knowledge and skills through designing and making.

    & Spelling

    Phonics & Spelling

The teaching of phonics and early reading throughout Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 via our early reading curriculum is of the highest priority. We aim to give children the best start on their reading journey by developing their phonological skills and knowledge needed in order to decode words independently. The Bug Club Phonics scheme allows children to secure each grapheme quickly, as we teach them the key phonological skills and knowledge needed in order to decode words independently. The more graphemes the children learn to read and write, the greater amount of words they will be able to read and spell.
