Religious Education
Intent
Our intent in RE is to allow pupils the opportunity to explore the big questions of life, appreciating their own and others’ beliefs and cultures in an environment of acceptance and respect. Through an enquiry based approach they can develop an understanding and appreciation for the beliefs and cultural practices of religions and worldviews in the local, national and wider global community, whilst also developing their own sense of identity through self-awareness and reflection.
Implementation
Our RE curriculum is designed to provoke challenging questions and prompt children to think deeply about their life, their world and their experiences, as well as thinking empathetically about the experiences of others.
We follow the requirements of the North Yorkshire Agreed Syllabus and study Christianity in more depth using Understanding Christianity resources. Our long term plan shows how units from both schemes are woven together to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for our children, where previous skills and knowledge are returned to and built upon.
Impact
The expected impact of our curriculum is that all children will know about and understand a range of religious and non-religious worldviews, so that they can:
- describe, explain and analyse beliefs and practices, recognising the diversity which exists within and between communities and amongst individuals
- identify, investigate and respond to questions posed, and responses offered, by some of the sources of wisdom found in religious and non-religious worldviews
- appreciate and appraise the nature, significance and impact of different ways of life and ways of expressing meaning.
