Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

Dear Year 1 Families

You are warmly invited to attend a meeting regarding the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, which your child will be taking in June. The meeting will take place on Wednesday 11th March at 5:00pm.

The Phonics Screening Check is a short, statutory assessment for Year 1 pupils. It is designed to assess children’s ability to decode words using their phonics knowledge. During the check, children are asked to read a series of real and pseudo (nonsense) words to demonstrate their understanding of letter sounds and blending skills. The assessment is carried out in a supportive, one-to-one setting with a familiar adult and is intended to be a positive and low-pressure experience for the children.

At the meeting, we will:

  • Explain how the Phonics Screening Check is administered

  • Share examples of the types of words children will be asked to read

  • Offer guidance on how phonics is taught in school

  • Provide practical advice on how you can support your child’s reading at home

Parents will also be given resources to help support their child’s phonics development and prepare confidently for the screening check.

We hope you will be able to join us, as working together will help ensure your child feels confident and well-prepared.

Kindest regards,

Rachael Heys
