Our topics being covered this half term are as follows:

English: ‘Leon and the Place Between’. This will produce lots of different genres of work from the pupils and I’ll be teaching lots of writing techniques using this book as the main stimulus.

Maths: Times Tables and counting every single lesson. Then we’ll be focusing on place value for the first half term.

Science: Animals including humans, we’ll be looking at food chains, nutrition of different animals, our digestive system and skeletal function.

R.E.: Will be focused on the Christian creation story and what we can learn about Christianity from this.

Guided reading: We’ll be reading as a class ‘Fortunately, the Milk’ which some pupils may have read before, however we’ll be working on our use of inference, deduction, summary and fact retrieval skills this half term using this book.

History: Ancient Greece! We’ll be diving straight into ancient civilisation and learning about life in Athens, how they’ve changed the world and what can we see of their society today.

French: We have already begun learning colours in French and will look at expanding these into short sentences expressing preference or description.

Art: This will be condensed into a packed Art week at the end of term. Drawing will be the skill focused on and we’ll be looking at various artists across time to consider different techniques.

PSHE: This term we’ll be looking at friendship and family; what it takes to be a good friend and what families can look like.

Music: Mr Stace will be tackling Rock and Roll with class 3 on Friday afternoons.

Computing: E-Safety and coding is this half term’s topic and will also be done with Mr Stace on Friday afternoons.

Homework I touched upon in my last email, but revolves purely around reading and times table practice. Year 4s, regular sound checks would be amazing, as it really helps the pupils see their own progress. Year 3s numbots and TTRS – any game modes are fantastic. If you think specific numbers should be focused on, please let me know and I can add/remove them from my side. All about keeping things fun, manageable and not overloading memory. Please assure the children that at this stage we are not expecting high scores however, this will improve as we practice more in class.

We will be doing spelling differently this year which won’t involve a weekly test. I will put groups of words onto Microsoft Teams for the Big Spell – but I’ll send more information on this nearer the time.

Kind Regards,

Jack Doohan
