The power of words!

At Burton Leonard we believe the development of Literacy skills is central to improving a child's life chances. We aim to deliver a high quality English curriculum that gives children the best possible opportunities to become confident, literate, successful members of society with a deep love and understanding of English language and literature. Great emphasis is placed on the teaching of reading, each child receiving individual attention as well as working in groups. We teach systematic synthetic phonics using the Bug Club Phonics programme. We believe parents have an active role to play in the development of their child's reading. Children are encouraged to take their reading books home, but we ask that they are returned the following day. Guided reading is used throughout school.  This enables teachers to work daily with a small focus group using a range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and plays.

Children are given a wide variety of writing tasks. We encourage children to write imaginatively and in their own individual style. We also teach the key skills of spelling, punctuation and grammar discretely or through topic learning experiences. Handwriting is taught from the baseline and is introduced in EYFS.

Children are encouraged to recount, discuss and debate as well as to listen to the views, opinions and news of others. Our school enters the North Yorkshire Debating Competition each year to give our children the experience of regional heats in each of the seven District Council areas with the winners of each heat then progressing to a County Final held in the Council Chamber at County Hall. Last year our team were lucky enough to be the winners of the Harrogate round and had the opportunity to debate in the Council Chamber!

We hold the North Yorkshire Dyslexia Quality Mark and operate dyslexia friendly practices across school.
